Position Description

Senior Organizer  

Location: Seattle, WA

Summary: Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the nation's fastest growing labor organization representing more than 2 million workers, is seeking a Senior Organizer to work in Seatlle, WA; Minneapolis, MN;Chicago, IL; Boston, MA; Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, PA; Los Angeles, Fresno or San, Francisco, CA; or Washington, DC. The Senior Organizer will represent and assist the International Union in organizing; take responsibility for major campaigns and act in a leadership role with respect to other staff; perform advanced training for organizers and staff of SEIU; and design and implement organizing which meet the goals of SEIU.

Job Description: The Senior Organizer performs a wide range of duties as assigned by the International Union and these may include some or all of the duties and responsibilities included within the organizer job description. These job areas may include:

Organizing, bargaining, training, International assignments (special project assistance), leadership support, joint / state council support, division program support, public policy action, community support, communications, strike support, economic research, limited grievance processing and arbitration, and other areas.

In addition, the Senior Organizer will routinely be assigned one or more of the following types of responsibilities:

  • to coordinate and direct organizing staff
  • to design and manage large organizational campaigns - including organizing, strikes, etc.
  • to develop programs for SEIU including - geographic, industry and issues programs focused on the central task of organizing
  • to design and implement staff training and development
  • to evaluate staff performance while that work is performed under the direction of the Senior Organizer
  • to direct major negotiations tied to organizing drives engaged
  • to temporarily run a local union
  • to take primary responsibility in coordinating affiliations and merger discussion
  • to formulate and administer a budget.

 

Job Qualifications: At least three years experience as a lead organizer with responsibility for planning and directing the work of others. Proven ability to work with Local Union Leaders and organizing directors on organizing program. Ability to lead staff and manage the administrative issues related to organizing. The Senior Organizer position requires a high level of judgement, leadership, and commitment to the goals of SEIU and its leaders. The Senior Organizer must be able to work independently with elected leaders in complex political and local union situations. The Senior Organizer must be available for regular and/or long-term travel over large geographic areas -- and the position often requires temporary assignments away from home as well as long and irregular hours. Senior Organizers must be able to act and organize their time extremely independently while maintaining a close relationship of responsibility to the International Union.

 

Preferences: Senior Organizers will be evaluated on their skill and ability in coordinating and developing major campaigns which enable SEIU to organize and represent workers successfully. Among other criteria they will be evaluated on their ability to motivate and inspire other staff members they are directing, to plan and carry out goals and timetables, to maintain and enhance working relationships between local union leaders and the International in a wide geographic area, and to analyze and report both successful and less successful campaigns, as well as to carry out assigned and required tasks in a competent and professional manner in keeping with SEIU's overall goals and expectations.

 

Compensation: Starting at $61,777, plus car allowance.
